About the Centre
[WHO Collaborating Centre for the Family of International Classifications in Japan]
WHO Collaborating Centres (WHO CCs) are research institutes, parts of universities or academies, or other institutions that are designated by WHO Director-General to carry out activities in support of WHO’s programmes. There are currently over 800 WHO Collaborating Centres in over 80 WHO Member States working with WHO on areas such as nursing, occupational health, communicable diseases, nutrition, mental health, chronic diseases and health technologies (https://www.who.int/about/collaboration/collaborating-centres).
In Japan, International Classification and Information Management Office to the Director-General for Statistics, Information Policy and Industrial Relations, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has been designated by the WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific as the WHO Collaborating Centre for the Family of International Classifications. The Centre fulfills its role through the “Collaborative Network of the WHO Collaborating Centre for the Family of International Classifications in Japan,” which has been organized with the cooperation of the related organizations shown below.

Activities in the 3rd Designation Period
- Activity 1: Support implementation of the WHO Family of Classifications
- Activity 2: Contribution for the WHO update and implementation of ICD-11
- Activity 3: Mortality use of WHO classifications to support WHO development of this area
- Activity 4: Support WHO for Traditional Medicine classification development and use
- Activity 5: Support WHO for implementation of International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF)
- Activity 6: Support WHO for the development and maintenance of the International Classification of Health interventions (ICHI)
- Activity 7: Review use of and input to WHO on International Classification of Disease application for Oncology
- Activity 8: Support WHO in education and training about the WHO Family of Classifications and its use
